Oxford's Architecture

by Deanna Pietrzak on 02/22/21

Introducing one of the newest and most exciting additions to Dicken's Village...Oxford's Radcliffe Camera!

As part of the second oldest university in the English speaking world, the Radcliffe Camera is a focal point at Oxford University in Oxford, England. The name "camera" comes from the Latin, "room". The building was named for John Radcliffe who died in 1714 and bequeathed the funds to design and construct the building. The architect, James Gibb, also designed the famous "St. Martin-in-the-Field" church.

45 Years of Family Tradition!

by Deanna Pietrzak on 01/26/21

One Christmas evening, a group of friends set off to enjoy a dinner of celebration at a small country inn nestled in a quiet, river town. As they rounded a bend in the road, they saw the small, old-fashioned village decorated for the holidays. The lights, like fairies, glowed and sparkled amid the freshly fallen snow. All evening, the conversation was full of Christmas memories and the visions the tiny town had evoked. Amidst the jovial banter and magical memories, the idea for a lighted Christmas village was born. That spark of an idea became a reality when, in 1976, Department 56 introduced a series of six hand-painted, ceramic buildings. The rest is history.

This year, Department 56 celebrates 45 years of The Original Snow Village! It all began back in 1976, with the introduction of four lighted houses and two churches. Department 56 takes pride that their artists have been designing in American since 1976 and everything they make continues to be crafted with meticulous attention to detail. Their talented artists bring to life the warm memories of connecting with others and sharing the holidays together. It's time to bring home that oh-so-festive feeling for The Original Snow Village collection from The Village Shoppes and join us in the celebration with warmth, tradition, and style.
